If you believe that the media’s purpose is to right social injustices, you’ll love Good News: Social Ethics and the Press. If you think the media should support the democratic process by providing people with information, no matter how painful it may be, you probably won’t like this book.
The authors review their perceptions of the problems with the classic liberal idea of autonomous press, while focusing on the press’s alternative role in community and relationship building. This communitarian ethical foundation encourages a mutually beneficial normative press concept.
The book allows us to take a closer look at our ideas about the media industry. The concepts are well- rooted and conceived. The book itself is frequently over-written and more complex than necessary.
Overall, I’m glad I read this book, but I would only recommend it to a niche audience with an interest in communitarian ethics.
