Wendy probably doesn’t care if I’m using use and used correctly in my text messages. Ok, she’s kind of a word nerd like me, so she may care a bit, but I don’t think she’d be judgey about it.
Despite that, I’ve found myself pausing several times during our text conversations to figure out if I should be writing that I use to do something or I used to do it.
I decided to check out the proper usage and share it with you here.
Come to find out, the answer is embarrassingly simple.
The correct way is to write that you used to do something because you are talking about past tense.
For example, I used to teach that in my writing class.
I’m not sure why I struggled with something so simple, but it’s like one day I just couldn’t remember how to use the phrase properly.
Thank goodness my texts with Wendy will be more grammatically sound now. I’m sure she’s been quite bothered with it all.
Ok, probably not, but I’ll feel better knowing how to use the phrase properly.

I definitely reworded an email just yesterday to avoid using the phrase “used to.” I couldn’t remember what was correct to save my life!
