Readers who follow my Real Nerds Read Facebook page commented when they noticed something unusual about my September reading reports. I gave four consecutive books a perfect grade.
Interestingly, I only read seven books in September, which is several books short of the monthly norm. Perhaps this is because I leisurely read these great books that I loved?
Regardless, here are the four fiction books that earned perfect grades last month.
I Found You
When a man shows up outside Alice’s beach house in Ridinghouse Bay, she takes him in out of the rain only to discover that he doesn’t know who is he or why he’s there.
The rest of I Found You by Lisa Jewell is about the man remembering little-by-little why he came back to the small costal town and remembering more than he even knew he’d forgotten.
Murder House
No. 7 Ocean Drive is a beautiful beachfront mansion in the Hamptons with a terrible secret.
Detective Jenna Murphy knows, when she begins investigating a double murder in the abandoned house, that there’s more to the house’s haunting history than most people care to admit, and she intends to find out what.
Murder House may be the first James Patterson book I’ve ever read, but it was worth the time.
Two By Two
Sometimes you just read what’s readily available in the online library. That’s how I ended up reading Murder House. It’s also why I read Two By Two by Nicholas Sparks.
I’m not sure I’ve ever read a Nicholas Sparks book before either. He’s always seemed just a little too “dramatic kissing in the rain” for my style. But I read the description for this book, it sounded interesting and it was available for immediate check out. You have to read something while you’re waiting for your holds, after all.
I actually loved the story of Russell Green, a 32-year-old advertising executive who thinks he has it all until his wife tells him she’s leaving.
Russell was a relatable character, even if it was obvious to the reader that his wife was about to up and go for money and a posh lifestyle, leaving him to raise their 6-year-old daughter.
One of the things I liked about this book is that you always hear and read about men doing this to women, leaving for the younger, flashier woman, but Sparks flipped to script. Russ’s character is sadly relatable as life deals him blow after blow, all while he’s just trying to be a good guy and raise his daughter right.
A Mother’s Confession
I found A Mother’s Confession by Kelly Rimmer on a book recommendation list that I shared on my Real Nerds Read Facebook page. I added to my “to read” list and just happened to choose it when it was time for me to host our monthly book club gathering. Let me tell you, we had a lot to talk about!
Olivia’s husband, David, committed suicide, and she is trying to put her life back together while being somewhat of an outsider in the town where David and his parents have long been a dominant family.
Olivia has to figure out how to process the death, and the abuse that came before it, to do the right thing for herself and her infant daughter.
I’ve recommended this book to several other women since our book club meeting and they all have loved it. It’s a must read.
