Eight tips to encourage blog comments

April 20, 2011 by Kenna Griffin

Maybe we’re narcissistic, but we all want them. The covet blog comments that tell us someone has been reading our post and thinks enough of it to not only have something to say, but also to take the time to type the response.

We all want comments, but we don’t all get them. I’ve joked that sometimes when I post a blog all I hear is the “crickets” chirping.

Let’s not be defeated! Here are Eight tips to encourage blog comments:

1. Include a call to action. Ask your readers a question at the end of your post. Seek their advice or input, making the post more interactive. This could be as simple as “What do you think?”

2. Do not require registry. Most people click off of your site if they’re asked to register before they can comment. Registration discourages interaction.

3. Respond to all comments. Once you’re an A-list blogger, this may become pretty difficult. However, while your comments are manageable, respond to everyone who comments. And make your response real. Don’t just say “thank you for the comment” (although you should include that as well), continue the conversation with the commenter by making a specific statement about their comment.

4. Comment on other blogs. If you comment on their blogs, they are likely to return the favor. Remember, blogging is about community building, not competition.

5. Use link plugins. The Comment Luv plugin gives people an extra link for commenting on your self-hosted WordPress blog. This encourages them to participate.

6. Take a position in your posts. If you take a stance on one side of an issue, you’re likely to get comments from people who agree and those who do not. In this way, writing a blog post can be considered a lot like writing an editorial.

7. Post on a regular schedule. This helps people know when to visit your blog for new information.

8. Pay attention to comments. If readers need a certain type of information, make that the subject of your next post. If you forgot a key point, alter the post and add a link to the reader who pointed it out.

What did I miss? How do you promote commenting on your blog?
