Whether you’re writing about when someone was born, when they died or how they remember a certain era, you’re likely to find yourself wondering how to write about decades.
According to the Associated Press Stylebook:
Use numerals when writing about decades. For example, I miss the 1990s.
Use apostrophes only where numbers are missing. For example, I was born in the ’70s.
The only other time you use an apostrophe when writing about decades is to indicate possession. For example, It is one of 2014’s best movies.
The most common decade-related writing mistake people make is using apostrophes where they are not needed. Just remember, you only use them where numbers are missing or when you’re making the decade possessive.
Now go forth and use words correctly!
