5 Things I’ll Need to Survive the Summer (2023 Edition)

May 24, 2023 by Kenna Griffin

I know it’s not technically summer, but graduations happened, and the academic year ended, so it’s summer in my world.

You may recall that summer is my favorite season. I love the sun, water, the smell of coconut and suntan oil, the slower pace of life… everything. There isn’t much about summer that I don’t love.

5 Things I’ll Need to Survive the Summer

In the tradition of summer around here on the blog, here is my list of five things I’ll need to survive the summer.

1. The Pool

The cool weather is hanging on here in Oklahoma, so we haven’t been in the pool as much as we’d like so far this year, but the time is coming!

I love our pool. I stop working between 3-4 p.m. every day the sun is shining to get in. We spend pretty much all of our weekends there. I could not survive summer without it, and I never want to live in another house without a pool.

2. Sunscreen

I love the sun, but I can’t be flippant about it. As I get older, I’m much more aware of sun damage and other harmful effects of too many rays. I use more sunscreen now than I ever have, which is a good thing.

3. Sundresses

Ok, I’m kinda cheating on this one. I know that sundresses are more than one thing. But who doesn’t love a good summer sundress? They’re so easy!

Sundresses are basically my summer uniform. I got the dress above from Amazon last week. I love it! It’s soft and casual and looks great with sandals. I ordered it in army green, but I think I will get navy too.

That’s another great thing about sundresses. If you find one you want, you can get it in multiple colors. Then you just change it up with shoes and accessories. Or, as one of my favorite TikTokers, Taryn Truly, says, “frosting.”

4. Kindle

So, you may recall that I challenged myself to read 200 books this year. I usually read a lot in the pool, but I’ll need to do that even more this summer.

I love reading on my iPad, but it doesn’t do well in the sun and isn’t waterproof. So, I bought a Kindle Paperwhite a few years ago.

This Kindle is completely waterproof (Trust me. I’ve dropped it in the pool more than once.) and glare-free. It’s perfect for outdoor reading in the pool or at the beach.

5. Daily Planners

You may remember me talking about my daily planner pages in a recent newsletter. These little guys are a game changer. I fill out one for each day of the week to make sure I never forget a task.

I still use my regular productivity system but replaced the journal to-do lists with these planning pages. I fill them out every Friday afternoon for the week ahead. They really help me stay organized, which I love all year, but especially during the summer.

In the summer, I bang out my work to get in the pool as quickly as possible in the afternoon. I don’t want to waste any sunshine!

What’s on Your Summer Survival List?

I probably don’t really need a list of things to survive the summer. After all, summer is when I thrive. But I want to stay organized and practical to get stuff done and enjoy my time.

What about you? I’m interested in what your lists looks like. What are five things you’ll need to survive this summer? Any tips or tricks for me for getting more done and taking advantage of my favorite months? I’d love for you to share.
