Apparently it’s difficult to shop for me.
This is news to me, since I’m pretty sure I’ve bought myself something in nearly every store I’ve visited while shopping for others on my Christmas list.
Despite this, my friends and family keep asking me what I want for Christmas. And my poor, sweet husband seems absolutely clueless to help them, even though I made a Pinterest board for this purpose.
Here’s the thing, there are certain items that always make the nerd in me happy. So, here’s a little list for those of you who have nerds like me in your life and aren’t sure what to buy them.
Books
Nerds love books. I actually was just thinking today that I would love to win the lottery so I could buy every book on my Amazon Wishlist and then just sit and read them back-to-back. Yes, those are the kind of fantasies nerds enjoy. Books, gift cards for books (think Amazon or Barnes and Noble) or eReaders all are wonderful gifts for nerdy people like me.
Bookends
My husband gave me bookends for Christmas last year. They start with “NE” and end with “RD.” I love them! What a perfect gift! Check out these punctuation bookends at Barnes and Noble. They are super cute!
Journals
As much as nerds love reading, we love writing even more. We tend to be a bit choosier about our journals. Some prefer Moleskins or a similar type. I like spiralbound journals so I can tear the pages out as I mark items off of my to do list. But, honestly, paper of any kind is a great gift for a writer.
Pens
Did I mention that nerds love writing? Pens also can be a bit of a preference item, but I’ve yet to meet a nerd who doesn’t love Sharpies. Trust me on this one.
Mugs
Nothing goes with reading and writing better than a hot mug of coffee or tea. You can never have too many big mugs. I love this one from ModCloth.
Blankets
There is nothing quite as wonderful as cozying up in my favorite reading chair with a good book and a soft blanket. I’m pretty sure my current favorite blanket came from Target. They don’t have to be expensive, but they must be soft. Look at these fabulous blankets at Kirkland’s.
Typography
I decorate with letters. I have a vase filled with Scrabble letters in my home office. I have “G”s on nearly every bookshelf in my house and at least one hanging on a wall in every room. A few years ago, I decided the ampersand was my favorite punctuation mark. I’ve been buying wooden ampersands since. A typography gift may take knowing your nerd a bit better, but you can always choose his or her initials.
If you’re reading this post, I assume you aren’t quite sure what gift to give the nerd in your life. I hope I helped. If not, I guess you can always fall back on a candle or a picture frame. Regardless, you’d better hurry! There are just a few more shopping days before Christmas.
Merry Christmas!

I love this list and I totally agree! I just wrote a blog post on my wish list on the site I write for: http://careergirlnetwork.com/the-creative-career-girl-holiday-wish-list/, and I think we have some in common. I need to add mugs to my list though — you really never can have too many, especially if you’re like me and drink a lot of coffee while you write!

MarcyFarrey You’ve got some big ticket items on your list, Marcy! I love to write with coffee in the morning or read with hot tea in the evening. Starbucks has fabulous big mugs. Also, don’t forget that warm, fuzzy blanket. I hope you have a Merry Christmas! Thanks for stopping by and for following me on Facebook and Twitter. I look forward to sharing. Kenna

What a great idea to have a Pinterest board for your wish list. You sound as if you shop like I do!
My daughter wanted to get me a bookmark, but that doesn’t work too well for ebooks she decided against it.
Merry Christmas!

wonderoftech There was a little problem with the pinterest board. I did it so early that my husband had a hard time finding many of the things in stock. There were just a lot that already were sold out.
I hope you had a Merry Christmas too!
