You must learn to accept criticism of your writing.
There is no such thing as perfect writing. Every piece deserves editing. And, the more edits you have time to complete, the better the piece will become.
However, it’s also important to understand that every story would be better with one more edit, another interview or one more source. You have to call it “done” at some point. Usually, for journalists, the point of completion is a deadline. So, you do the best you can in the time available.
Your goal, as a writer, should be for every potential pitfall for readers to be identified and eliminated before they ever see your finished work. You should work to give your readers the quality of writing they deserve and that which makes you proud.
You also should recognize that your writing gets better only through writing. You’ll likely hate something you wrote yesterday because what you drafted today is much better. This sounds terrible, but it actually is a good thing. It means you’re growing as a writer. Embrace the messy writing process.
