The Palm Beach Post
The Palm Beach Post in West Palm Beach, Fla., is looking for top reporting candidates for summer 2018 paid internships as well as a coding-savvy reporter for a six-month, paid data internship starting as early as January 2018.
In South Florida, you’ll find warm weather and open records laws that sizzle. We’re known for exposing corruption, grabbing a piece of every big national story and, of course, Mar-a-Lago, the winter White House of Donald J. Trump.
If you’re dedicated to a career in news gathering and want a place to show what you can do, our summer internship is for you. Our interns must juggle a load of daily news and crime stories, features and, when they really put their mind to it, the kind of in-depth stories that make journalism great.
Summer interns must have at least two years of college and an interest in the job proven by their clippings. They must be quick to report and write, willing to juggle multiple stories and eager to absorb the nuances of one of Florida’s largest and most diverse counties. It helps if they can sort a spreadsheet, shoot photos and are adept at all types of social media, from tweeting out links to shooting Facebook Live videos and telling Snapchat stories.
For the data internship, the ideal candidate should have enough flexibility to pick technologies to solve the needs of a small data desk. Coding experience is essential. Let us know your preferred means and area of coding expertise. Our ideal candidate is aching to crunch numbers but also can make them come alive online. The position calls for helping all newsroom reporters with data analysis while pursuing in-depth projects with The Post’s investigative team.
The data intern must be available to work 40 hours a week. The job is full-time but temporary in duration, lasting six months. A four-year college degree is preferred. The internship is scheduled to begin in January 2018. However, candidates graduating in spring/summer are encouraged to apply.
For both internships, interested candidates should provide a cover letter, resume, references and writing or coding samples. Please indicate which internship you are seeking. Data candidates, please indicate if you will be attending the NICAR conference in Chicago in March.
