I was a reading machine last month!
I read 13 books in November. Of those, I gave six a perfect score.
Two of the books that I gave a perfect rating were books I was rereading with students.
The first was Dave Cullen’s book, Columbine. I read the book when it first came out, but felt like class discussion would be better if I reread it with the students. Come to find out, my students and I are still learning from Columbine.
The second book I reread with the same class was Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town by Jon Krakauer. I originally reviewed Missoula back in May. My students still are finishing this book. I can’t wait to hear what they think when they’re done.
The other four books I gave perfect scores were divided between fiction and non-fiction.
The two fiction books were by the same author—Rachel Cruze. If you’ve never heard of her, Rachel is Dave Ramsey’s daughter. I loved Rachel’s practical advice in Love Your Life, Not Theirs so much that I then read the book she and her Dad cowrote, Smart Money, Smart Kids. I’m a so-so Ramsey fan, but I’m a huge Rachel fan!
In Love Your Life, Not Theirs, Rachel explains in practical terms how to best use your money and create habits that help you live a life that satisfies you instead of constantly comparing.
In Smart Money, Smart Kids, Rachel gets her Dad’s help in explaining to parents how to teach their kids responsibility with money. We already are implementing some of these changes at our house. While it will be difficult for our kids to adjust to initially, the authors explain that the worst thing parents can do for their children’s financial futures is to act like an ATM every time they need money. I’m excited to share this challenging learning and growing experience with our kids. This book is a must read for any parent. I wish I had read it earlier.
The other two books I gave perfect grades were fiction.
Evelyn, After by Victoria Helen Stone is the story of Evelyn Tester, a suburban housewife who is married to a prestigious, wealthy psychiatrist and spends her days volunteering at her teenage son’s school. Evelyn gets a call one night to come help her husband who has been in an accident. But, when she arrives, her husband’s mistress is with him. The book is about Evelyn trying to come to terms with her husband’s affair, the accident that killed a young woman and the kind of man her husband really is.
Maribeth Klein is running around like a crazy person, taking care of everyone else. She’s so busy that she doesn’t even want to take time to be in the emergency room when she has a heart attack. Leave Me by Gayle Forman is the story of post-attack Maribeth who runs away from her husband and children to try to figure out her life.
There’s a lot of variety to the books I loved in November. I hope you find something you love on the list. As always, Happy Reading!
