Cue the funeral music, it is a sad day in journalism history.
Hearst abandoned the print edition of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, making it the first major metropolitan newspaper to go exclusively online. Prior to going online, the 146-year-old newspaper had a circulation of nearly 118,000. The newspaper also was the oldest business in Seattle, according to its coverage of change.
Newspaper executives across the U.S. undoubtedly will be watching the Post-Intelligencer to see how the change works. If the outcome is positive, expect a deluge of similar publishing decisions in the future. Is it wrong to hope the Post-Intelligencer fails?
